March 21, 2020. The Japanese Garden in Kew Gardens, London. The scene, complete with Chokushi-Mon or Gateway of the Imperial Messenger, the structure in the background, was set.

I waited for as many people as possible to get out of the shot, and hoped that nobody was going to unknowingly saunter into it. I was ready.

And ‘Action …!’ I was about to press the button on my camera when lo and behold, an actor from ‘Wildlife’ walked into the scene. I was agog. As if on cue, this exquisitely beautiful peacock walked on to the ‘set’, ruffled his feathers, walked and pecked around a bit (all unscripted, mind), and then casually exited the scene.

I managed to gather myself mid-performance and got some shots.

Perfect timing, nature! What better device could I have asked for? It doesn’t get much better than an unscripted peacock, courtesy of nature!

Job done, the star peacock settled down and showed the gathering crowd just how well his plumage complimented the border foliage!

I hadn’t seen a live peacock for a while so I was totally enthralled.
